約４０００年前のエジプトで飲まれていた古代ビールの“復刻版”が今月中旬、いよいよ販売されることになった。黄桜（京都市伏見区）と京都大、早稲田大が共同開発した「ホワイトナイル」で、これまでは通常の小麦を使って「古代風」の商品を販売していたが、当時の原料とされる小麦の量産に成功。商品化にこぎ着けた。製法は現在のままだが、関係者は「古代のロマンと味わいを堪能してほしい」と話している。
古代エジプトのビールをめぐっては、平成１６年、エジプト考古学の権威で元早大教授の吉村作治・サイバー大学長らが壁画を分析し、古代製法を再現。この時は、高コストなどの理由から商品化は見送られた。
しかし、京大と早大が引き続き古代ビールの“復刻”を検討。約１万種の小麦を収集、保存している京大が、古代エジプトでアルコール飲料の原料に用いられていた「エンマー小麦」の種子を黄桜に提供し、１７年秋から京大付属農場（大阪府高槻市）で量産体制へ向けた試行錯誤が続けられた。
私はビールはあまり好きではないのだが、ちょっと面白いなぁと思った。この古代のビールでどれだけ古代に浸れるかは分からないが、飲んでいる間だけでも「これが古代か～」と思うことができればいいのではないかと思う。
他にもビールではない古代の食べ物があれば食べてみたいかも、と思うが、実際の製法で作っても結構美味しかったのではないかな、などと思っている。古代の人も出来る範囲でグルメを楽しんでいたに違いないのである。
